Kaiserwerth, Germany

where i got recharged by kitty purrs

Located just outside Düsseldorf, I came to Kaiserwerth for another house/pet sit. It happened rather quickly and last minute. While using the free WiFi on board the Flixbus from Frankfurt to Cologne I saw the posting for that weekend and applied. I was headed to Amsterdam and Düsseldorf was on the way so it would be a perfect opportunity. Plus I was already getting burned out from moving to a new city every day, sleeping in hostel bunk rooms, and smelling bad from not doing laundry in over a week so a housesit would give me the chance to regroup and relax in one place for a few days. The host confirmed me for the sit while I was nearby in Cologne and it was a short train ride to get there.

For this housesit I took care of two pretty fluffy cats in an apartment near the Rhine River. Just like in Vevey, I hunkered down and didn’t get out much, taking advantage of some solitude after being on the go and surrounded by people. I find that it helps me recharge and makes this long backpacking trip through Europe more sustainable so I don’t get burned out on travel-yes, that happens. So my time there was spent watching Netflix, doing a blog, and snuggling with the cute kitties. The extent of my time in town was walking through a park to the grocery store. But my last day there I walked to Kaiserpfalz Kaiserwerth, the remains of a 12th-century castle sitting along the Rhine River. Then a short walk through town and that was it. I didn’t go out to eat at any of the local places, partly to reduce expenses, but I did try their local beer, Füchschen Alt, that the host recommended and I was able to pick it up at the grocery store. All in all I had a nice restful time in small town Germany.
