#Camperolla

car camping in a small 1998 Toyota Corolla

I got Camperolla when I was 16 and had it for 18 years until 2021 when I upgraded to a minivan. Camperolla had about 270,000 miles on it and went through 40 states. I started sleeping in Camperolla back in 2010 on my first long distance road trip from Alabama to Alaska.

car camping: privacy or police

In this video of Camperolla Adventures I share how my DIY window coverings gave me much needed privacy while sleeping in my car, but also brought about suspicion from the local cops.

Car Camping: Remove your seats

This video isn't about exciting road trips or sleeping in my car but rather about the advantages for removing your passenger seat. My camperolla is pretty small but not having my passenger seat allows me to haul larger bulkier items. Check out the video to hear about 3 items I've been able to cram in my car.

Urban car camping in camperolla

In this video of Camperolla Adventures I share how I car camp in urban areas, specifically in the Northeast. It's very different than car camping out west with more public lands. Spoiler: I sleep in Walmart parking lots. ..I'm no expert in stealth car camping but I have become comfortable sleeping at Walmart now that I've done it dozens of times.

Car Camping: Camperolla’s Final adventure

The time has come to say goodbye to ole Camperolla™. I've had my '98 Toyota Corolla for 18 years! It's the only car I have ever had and it has been through 40 states (even Alaska) and has 267,000 miles (bought used). Fun fact: the cost of this car over the past 6570days has come out to be around $1 a day! I think I got my money's worth! This farewell video is loaded with goodies like an update on my XC road trip from Maine, a spontaneous thrift haul in camperolla, a silly silent film I recorded on Halloween night at a Walmart in Maine, and so much more! Hopefully camperolla has inspired you to make all your car sedan camping dreams come true!

At the end of 2018 I was seriously looking for vans to convert to live in as I wanted a vehicle I could stand up in and live comfortably in for months at a time. I work seasonally and would love to be able to reduce housing costs and just live in a van while I work and then travel. In the end I couldn’t make the decision to spend half of my savings as well as see my car insurance costs go up as well as my gas budget increase so I decided to see if I could convert my small car into a camper. [but I’ve already got my future van’s name, that I’m laying claim to right now—Barry Vanilow—it’s mine, don’t take it :)]

I took out my passenger seat as well as the back portion of the back passenger seat. My dad stacked up some wood blocks and layed a piece of wood down that I then covered with 2 bench cushions. I covered those cushions with tarp and voila I had a place I could lay completely horizontal with my feet sticking into my trunk a little ways. I later added a thermarest sleeping pad on top of the cushions, and coupled with my 0 degree sleeping bag I was ready to sleep in the car. I hit the road and over 4 weeks I slept in my car in Walmart parking lots, at rest stops, on national forest land, and at apartment complexes in 9degrees. The car isn’t as nice as a van might be but it works for short-term car camping.

If you’re thinking about getting on the road and traveling, I encourage you to just go out and do it. There’s no need to wait around until you have the perfect set-up, just get going and make it work with what you have. Happy travels!

**UPDATE: DECEMBER 2021* Camperolla has taken its final adventure and is now headed for the great salvage lot in the sky (actually it was given to our local mechanic to fix up and pass along to an elderly woman in the area). I have just bought a 2006 Toyota Sienna XLE AWD with 97,000 miles. I converted it into a mini campervan. You can check out that page here.
